Crisálida

The Franco-Andalusian artist Marie-Isabelle Poirier Troyano (Antequera, 1970), a resident of Genalguacil, unveils for the first time in a solo exhibition the full aesthetic power of her work, bringing together some of her early pieces with her most recent creations. Textiles, in their broadest formal diversity, serve as the medium through which she experiments with total freedom, following her instincts wherever they lead her. This was the case with shibori, an ancient Japanese technique she learned self-taught, which involves reserving certain areas of fabric to prevent them from absorbing dye. The result is compositions in shades of blue or black that vary in design depending on the type of resistance applied (stitching, folding, twisting, tying). While there is a degree of control, the final work is always subject to an element of unpredictability—a quality the artist deeply values. Her creative drive is fueled by the surprise born from intuition and the natural world's inherent laws.

Over the years, Poirier Troyano has mastered various shibori techniques, even developing her own variant called "reverse," where instead of adding color, she removes it using bleach. Aesthetically and conceptually, she replaces the idea of a stain with that of a trace—something that remains despite erosion and evokes the past. Her fabrics are filled with subtlety and skill, but also a latent darkness tied to the pain of loss in her personal history. Time passes, and shifts in her life path are reflected in her artistic practice, resulting in a body of work that is open, personal, and enriched by various techniques and approaches. Tools such as the tufting gun, punch needle, natural dyes, magic needle, and hand embroidery come together to create pieces that gain in freshness, maturity, and volume. Threads and fabric fragments extend outward, generating organic, elusive forms that seem to shape themselves as if moved by an intrinsic force.

At the end of the exhibition space, the most ambitious piece is a collaborative mural created with the residents of Genalguacil, mostly women, revisiting the communal and oral traditions associated with sewing. Relationships are woven, emphasizing the value of the creative process itself. In this sense, the exhibition’s progression—from the artist’s early works to her latest—highlights the importance of transitional states, when everything is changing without us even realizing it. These moments materialize in bridging works—pieces that link two stages, places, or ways of being in the world. This is evident in the blue net, resembling a nymph on the verge of emerging, the "notebook-like" embroidery sketches the artist made during her daily travels, or the shibori sculptures that have never been, and never will be, unwrapped. These are eternal chrysalises, embodying the beauty of transformation itself.
